Speech and Debate Clinics: 2013

For the past 10 years, Sue Gray has actively encouraged and supported students as they developed their ability to communicate confidently and persuasively on a public platform.  She has coached a number of students who have earned scholarships and awards at the state, regional and national level.  Sue is the founder of Speak Out NC, and the 1st National Forensic League Chartered home school program.  Sue has a Master’s degree in Education and she has earned a coaching degree of Superior Distinction with the National Forensic League.  This summer and fall, Sue plans to offer a variety of speech communications classes to the home school community.  If you have a middle school or high school age student who is interested in public speaking or debate please consider the following options.

NON-COMPETITIVE CLASS OPTIONS:

These classes are for students who are interested in gaining skill in speech and debate,
but do not want to join SpeakOut or compete in speech or debate. 

Introduction to Speech Communications (Fall, 2013):

This 8 week class will serve middle school and high school age students. Training will introduce:  effective speech writing, effective delivery skills, extemporaneous speaking, professional dress, and how to survive college/employment interviews. Students will be given weekly assignments which may include: Observing/analyzing speakers, writing speeches, memorizing scriptures and/or short quotes, writing peer and/or self critiques, and preparing for an end of semester speech presentation. 

  • Commitment: Faithful class attendance, and approximately 1 hour of homework each week

Introduction to Argumentation and Debate: (Fall, 2013 – non competitive)

This 8 week class will help middle school and high school age students develop their skills in persuasive argumentation. A variety of debate styles will be introduced including: parliamentary debate, Lincoln Douglas debate, Public Forum debate, Congressional debate, and Policy debate.

COMPETITIVE SPEECH AND DEBATE AND/OR
CLUB MEMBERSHIP IN SPEAK OUT NC:

These classes are for students who are interested in competing with the NCFCA or NFL, 
and who want to be members of SpeakOut.

Introduction to Competitive Forensics: (Summer, 2013)

This 3 day intensive course will be geared towards middle school and high school aged students who are interested in competing with the NCFCA or NFL.  Students taking this class will learn how to compete in a variety of competitive events including: Platform, Interpretive, Story Telling, Limited Preparation, and manuscript events. Students taking this class will have the option of competing in a practice tournament on November 9 at Colonial Baptist Church. This 3 day class is a pre-requisite for membership in Speak Out NC.

  • Minimum Age: Students must be age 12 by Jan 1, 2014
  • Cost: $75:00. 
  • Options: This class is offered four times. You will choose the dates you want when you register.
    • June 12-14, 9am-12pm
    • June 12-14, 1-4pm
    • July 31-August 2, 9am-12pm

Introduction to Competitive Debate: (Summer, 2013)

This 3 day intensive course will be geared towards middle school and high school aged students who are interested in competing with the NCFCA or NFL.  Students will learn the various types of debate that are available in Forensic competitions.  Focus will be given to the “one on one” debating style known as Lincoln Douglas debate.  Students taking this class will have the option of competing in a practice tournament on November 9 at Colonial Baptist Church. This 3 day class is a pre-requisite for Speak Out NC debate club membership.

  • Minimum Age: Students must be age 12 by Jan 1, 2014
  • Cost: $75:00. 
  • Options: This class is offered four times. You will choose the dates you want when you register.
    • June 19-21, 9am-12pm
    • June 19-21, 1-4pm
