Carolyn Cuany is organizing a homeschool community garden for Summer 2015 and would love for you and your family to be part of the fun! It will be located on Stagecoach Rd. in Durham about 5 minutes from both Southpoint Mall and Meadowmont in Chapel Hill. You are invited to come and grow plants on your own “plot” or help us grow a large community garden. We have a large area ready for loving hands to plant and nurture. We will provide all materials necessary, but you are welcome to bring your own tools or plants if you choose! We plan to do some lessons on gardening, composting, sustainability, and cooking. After gardening, families are welcome to stay and take a dip in the pool/hot tub – so bring your swimming gear on hot summer days.
We plan to include: carrots, snap peas, tomatoes, watermelon, corn, and our very own strawberry patch! We will also do an herb box. These are some of our students’ favorite fruits and veggies, but you and your family are welcome to bring other plants, or contribute ideas to us so we can grow your family’s favorites. Some other plants that grow well in NC are: blueberries, green beans, beets, cucumber, kale, lettuce, onion, peppers, radish, squash/zucchini and herbs.
The American Heart Association inspired the homeschool garden. The AHA brings fruit and vegetable gardens to schools around the country to inspire healthy living. We will be collaborating with the organization to provide some fruit-and-veggie inspired lessons and workshops. They even provide cooking classes after harvesting begins!
